ADEQ (Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality) – the Arkansas state regulatory and enforcement arm for waste and pollution control.
EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or USEPA) – the United States federal government agency which was created for the purpose of protecting human health and the environment by writing and enforcing regulations based on the laws passed by the U.S. Congress.
Karst topography – a type of topography that is formed on limestone, gypsum and other soluble rocks (primarily by dissolution) and characterized by sinkholes, caves and underground drainage.
Leachate – a liquid that has dissolved or entrapped environmentally harmful substances which may potentially enter the environment.
NABORS (North Arkansas Board of Regional Sanitation) – the current name for the landfill located in Baxter County, AR.
NABORS Alliance – an alliance formed in 2010 of Baxter County, Marion County and Mountain Home to purchase NABORS landfill. In September 2011, Mountain Home pulled out of the alliance. The alliance members are also members of OMSWD.
NWAEDD (Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District) – the 2005’s county judges and mayors in charge of solid-waste management for a six-county (Baxter, Boone, Carroll, Marion, Newton and Searcy) area. They bought the NABORS landfill in 2005 from RLH and, after four years of mismanagement, was taken over by OMSWD in 2009.
OMSWD – Ozark Mountain Solid Waste District includes Baxter, Boone, Carroll, Marion, Newton, and Searcy Counties in North Central Arkansas.
